Class Dates: Tuesday’s, Thursday’s & Sunday’s: September 16, 2025 – December 16, 2025
Times: Tuesday and Thursday classes meet from 6 PM – 10 PM. Sunday classes meet from 8 AM - 4 PM (varies).

Cost: Funding will be requested through the 2025/2026 State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Training Grant. Please be advised that this funding is first come, first served and may not be available. Below is the possible cost, please plan accordingly.
$1,500.00 registration, books & online learning platform (Navigate)
$585.00 Rental Gear – Turnout Gear Rental, Inc (not included in Grant)
BCI Background Check – To be completed on own
Gear supplied from a sponsoring department must be within NFPA 10 yr. compliance
Prerequisite: Valid CPR and First Aid Certification
Completed NFPA compliant physical examination by Doctor
Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI) check
Placement Test: Please contact the training center to schedule your exam.
Students may enter the program if they are at least 17 years old and in their final year of high school. All students are required to take an entry level placement test prior to being accepted into the program. This test will cover reading, mathematical computation, language, and spelling.
The test is given at the Howland Fire Department at 169 Niles Cortland Rd NE (near the intersection of Route 46 and E. Market). Park in the rear of the building and enter through the glass door #2 located under the awing. You will need to allow 1-1/2 hours to take the test. Please check the date that you are taking the pretest on your registration form and return. You may come in anytime between the hours shown above. The test on Saturday is only offered at 9 AM. There is no fee to take the test. Students are permitted to take the test twice.
Students must provide the following information the first night of class:
Copy of an Ohio driver’s license
Copy of Valid CPR & First Aid Card
Completed NFPA-compliant physical examination by Doctor – Forms attached
Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI) check paid for by the candidate.
ProBoard: Following the issuance of an Ohio Firefighter I or Firefighter II certificate to practice, the firefighter will be emailed a notice of eligibility and a link to apply for Pro Board certification.
